Rainbow Lake

We took another break at Rainbow Lake.  There wasn't anyone else there.  We were all footsore and Michelle and I took off our boots for a little while.  Amazing how much a break like that can do for you.
We didn't hang around too long, though.  After about 30 minutes, we hit the trail again.  The trail follows the shoreline for the entire length of this beautiful lake.

The Trail to Rainbow Lake

I really like this image of the switchbacks on this trail between Lake at Falls and Rainbow Lake (you can see just the edge of the lake in the picture above).
The trail was steep, but well engineered through this rockslide.
Another picture of me here above Rainbow Lake.  So hazy from smoke - you really can't see the beautiful blue-green color of the water.
Rainbow Lake is a favorite stopping point on this trail.  There is a large meadow at the inlet that can accommodate a lot of campers.

Rainbow Lake is at 7670 feet.  It is 57 acres in size and 180 feet deep at it's deepest point.

Lake at Falls

Lake at Falls is one of my favorite lakes on this trail.  Two years ago, we spent an entire day relaxing, soaking up the sun, and trying to catch the hybrid cutthroat-golden trout in these waters.

This time, we just stopped for a snack.   It was smoky and also breezy, so we rested a while, then headed on down the trail.

Big Park Lake along the Beaten Path in the Beartooth Wilderness

The trail became much more forested as we dropped down to a lower elevation on Day 3 of our trip through the Beartooth Wilderness.

We passed by Big Park Lake.
The smoke was really moving in by this point, and the views were getting pretty hazy.

Duggan Lake

Duggan is a very shallow lake - it is possible to see right to the bottom.
It makes a wonderful reflecting pool for the waterfall.

Impasse Falls Trail

The trail down from Impasse Falls follows along the edge of this rock wall.

The trail is rocky at times and precarious.
As we dropped lower, we were able to see more of the waterfall, which is about 100 feet.  I know it is much bigger than this earlier in the season.
This picture (above) doesn't really show it, but the steel and wooden "dam" on the trail is breaking apart and may someday give way.  It seems to be holding for now.

I get sort of disoriented by heights like this and I felt I had to brace myself against the wall to take this picture of the entire falls (below).  I guess I also needed to get as far back as possible to get the whole thing in the frame.

Approaching Impasse Falls

At Impasse Falls, East Rosebud Creek tumbles down into Duggan Lake below.

There was a lot of smoke in the air, making everything look hazy.

Here is the creek, starting over the falls.
Looking down on Duggan Lake from the top of the waterfall.

Beet It - SAQA Auction

Tomorrow, my piece will be available for bidding in the SAQA Fundraiser.  It is an online auction.  The price opens tomorrow at $750, then drops each day until the pieces are sold.

I've had my work sell on that first day - at $750.  Shocking - I know, but it has happened a couple of times.  I was slow getting my piece sent in this year, so I ended up on the very last page .  . . . the very end of the auction.  I do think placement has an impact, but we shall see!

All donated pieces are 12" square.  This piece is a gelatin plate print done with beets from the Farmer's Market.

Here is a link to the page containing my piece in the SAQA Online Benefit Auction.

The Beaten Path Near Twin Outlets

Here are a few images from the trail near Twin Outlets Lake.
We had to stop and take in the views (and take pictures!)

This is the view from that point on the trail.

Twin Outlets Lake Reflections

Our third day on "The Beaten Path", we started out about 8:30 AM and dropped immediately down to Twin Outlets Lake.  There was a smoky haze in the sky, but no clouds.  Again, we were treated to beautiful reflections in the lake.

Twin Outlets Lake is very interesting - somewhat irregularly shaped, with trees around it - the views changed every few steps.

 Beautiful spot!

Dewey Lake Outlet

The outlet of Dewey Lake is a waterfall.

This picture shows Michelle at the bottom of the waterfall coming out of Dewey Lake.
