It's a Pieris japonica, also known as Andromeda: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pieris_(plant) It's a broadleaf evergreen, similar in habit and requirements to a rhododendron or mountain laurel, and yes, it's a lovely thing,
Pieris is right...and yes, it if often called lily of the valley tree. I had some lovely examples when I lived in Connecticut. Alas, they are shade and acid soil lovers, neither of which I have here. :(

I think it's some kind of japonica.
