The Beaverhead was noted in the journals of Meriweather Lewis,
"The Indian woman (Sacajawea) recognized the point of a high plain to our right which she informed us were not very distant from the summer retreat of her nation . . . This hill she says her nation (the Shoshoni) calls the beaver's head from a conceived resemblance of its figure to the head of that animal"
Owners of the ranch that overlooks the Beaverhead rock have established this interpretive sight near the wetlands at the base of the Beaverhead.
