The straight line of the bottom of the black strip bothers me a bit. I actually like it better in the second where the bottom of the black strip meets the bottom of the piece. Alternately, turn both of these examples upside down for review (I can't see the writing clearly, so I am not sure if this would make sense up close). Or cut the bottom edge of the black strip to be more unpredictable. I enjoy reading your musings over which direction to take a piece. Often mulling them over in my mind, too. Thanks for a view into your process.
It reminds me of how our mountains look when the moon has gone behind them... that afterglow. It does change the feel of the piece, but again adds a focal point. The only thing that doesn't seem to work well is the straight bottom line of the black strip...
