Cairns #1

This handpainted, hand printed piece is made of cotton broadcloth and cheesecloth.
It was first painted in a colorwash of Setacolor paints, followed by block printing and screenprinting. The screenprints are from my own photographs of petroglyphs we have visited over the years.
Next, I did machine stitching and hand stitching, adding stone fragments stacked in "cairns", which are often found in treeless areas to mark trails (we see these a lot in the Beartooth Mountains where we love to hike during the summer).

The stones in this piece were collected from the Earthquake Lake area we visited earlier this summer.

It has been stretched around a prepared 16 x 20" canvas.

You can see my background painting process from start to finish in this previous post.

  1. Usually I find white to be rather distracting but you have managed to make it an integral part of the piece. It appears richly complex and invites a great deal of inspection--for me the mark of a great piece. Thanks for sharing it with us--and hope this is the beginning of a series and we will see more.
