Who Has Seen the Wind?

 Jumping ahead, here.  I failed to take any intermediate shots of this quilt as it was a work in progress.  I have only a few detail images to share, as this piece will be entered in an invitational exhibition and I need to keep the full image under wraps until then.

Here it is in it's full and finished state.  I decided to go ahead and try making all the edges jagged.  I used my usual fused binding technique, but there were a lot of little corners to bind!  I think it took as long to bind this piece as it did to quilt it!  I figured I could always trim it into a nice straight rectangle if this approach failed. 

Now, about the title.  I have been using Primary City (for the primary color scheme).  I am not crazy about that title, so will have to mull the title.  Usually a good final title comes to me during the final stages of construction, but that has not happened yet with this piece.  Hopefully, I will come up with something by the time I am ready to add a label.

OK, so here it is with the quilting finished, but I have not yet trimmed it.  Some of the people in WAV, my small art quilt group really liked the wonky edge on the left side and were encouraging me to keep it.  Decision time.....

The quilting goes a lot quicker than I expected.  I had this one finished in half a day!

Thread Auditions for Primary City

Auditioning threads is always interesting.  I pull out a few feet and puddle the thread over the quilt to see how it looks.  Sometimes I am surprised by the results, but it is the best way I know of to make the difficult choice.

Preparing to Quilt Primary City

 After a bit of thought, I have decided to go forward with the quilting on this piece.  Originally, I thought I might zig zag the raw edges, but I have decided against that in favor of quilting each strip of the collage individually while also straight stitching along each raw edge. So, it begins with layering everything on my work table and pinning the layers together.

The quilting is now finished and I am looking at this piece on the design wall.  I am really on the fence with this one.....I do not love it, and am not sure I should finish it.  Is it worthy of binding?  I will at least trim it and take another look before I decide.

 I've used a very loose stitch (moving the quilt really fast under the needle) and a variety of threads to build up visual interest in the blue area.

I did not enjoy the quilting on this one.  I am accustomed to doing swirls and waves.  Straight lines and messy and overlapping felt foreign and was boring.....

At this stage of completion, I am going to have to limit my blog posting to this one last detail shot.  The artists have been asked not to reveal our pieces on our blogs or websites.  I did not get any pictures of the fossil fabric when I was making it.....it was a hectic time and I had no Photoshop for photo editing since my hard drive had crashed and my laptop was sent away for repair.  That is one of the many things that slipped through the cracks from late September to late October.  But here is a rather fuzzy shot - you get the idea.

I am afraid this is the most complete image I will be showing you until after the show opens in the spring.  I am happy to report that I was able to complete this entire quilt from plain white and black fabric in just two weeks.  It is fully quilted and bound, with the sleeve stitched in place.  It measures 72 x 72".  I have been able to get it professionally photographed, too.  So this one is behind me now.  Whew!
