Back Down the Trail from Mystic Lake

After spending a few hours of quality time at Mystic Lake, we climbed up out of the basin and headed for the trailhead, 3 1/2 miles away.

Everyone was still in good spirits and had good energy for the return hike.

Mystic Lake Views

It is always thrilling to climb up over the ridge and get that first view of Mystic Lake, the largest lake in the Beartooth Mountains.

Mystic Lake Trail

The trail to Mystic Lake is 3 1/2 miles each direction.  Here are a few trail shots taken on the way up.   The temperature was good for hiking.  Maybe high 60's or low 70's.  And no bugs!

West Rosebud Creek Trail

Summer is here and we take every opportunity to get into the back country.  This day, we took our two grandsons on their first hike of the summer to Mystic Lake.  Airus is 8 and Breckin is 5.  We were not sure how the day would go, but it started out with a lot of enthusiasm and rushing water!

Straight Stitching on Red Swirls

Another of my ideas is to cover the piece with straight (or almost straight) stitching.  I am not sure what I want to do here, and maybe I won't actually make a decision until the snow starts flying, because it is time to get into the mountains!

Black Swirl on Red?

One of my ideas is to emphasize the swirls by using black thread to add more quilted swirls.

Featured Artist on Dinner at Eight

Today I am the featured artist on the Dinner at Eight blog.  They are sharing interviews with all the artists in this year's new exhibition:  "Reflections".  My piece is being kept under wraps until the opening.  (it has also been photographed for inclusion in Quilting Arts Magazine!)

Bighorn Canyon Boating

We recently had a wonderful day on the water in the Bighorn Canyon.  Here is a picture of our truck and boat at the Devil's Canyon overlook.  That is Big Pryor Mountain in the background.

The Bighorn River has been dammed and what was once a rushing whitewater river is now a lazy long lake that winds through a majestic canyon.

My daughter, Michelle and her fiancee, Tony joined us for this outing.  It was fun!

Petroglyph Canyon Collage Piece View

Well, here we are with all the black foundation fabric covered by hand dyed or hand painted, printed fabric.  My petroglyph canyon may need a little tweeking, but I am liking it so far.

Happy 4th of July to all my blog friends!

Expanding the Landscape

Looking at the work in progress on the design wall, I felt it needed to be a much more panoramic type view.  Square or almost square was not really working for me, so I started on another one the same size - making this piece potentially about 45" tall x 90" wide.  Standing back for a look - yes - I think this is going in the right direction.

Up on the Design Wall

I have been working on this piece flat on my ironing table.  It is hard to get a good read on the imagery that way - especially for something so large.  This measures about 45 x 50. So, I went ahead and fused the pieces I had in place using my iron and then I moved it to the design wall to get a better look at it.  There are spaces yet to fill in, but I think I am heading in the right direction.  The black is the foundation and it should all disappear.
