Petroglyph Canyon
I have returned to this piece begun in May 2014. Here it is as a fused collage. Time for some layering and quilting.

Petroglyph Canyon Collage Piece View
Well, here we are with all the black foundation fabric covered by hand dyed or hand painted, printed fabric. My petroglyph canyon may need a little tweeking, but I am liking it so far.

Expanding the Landscape
Looking at the work in progress on the design wall, I felt it needed to be a much more panoramic type view. Square or almost square was not really working for me, so I started on another one the same size - making this piece potentially about 45" tall x 90" wide. Standing back for a look - yes - I think this is going in the right direction.

Up on the Design Wall
I have been working on this piece flat on my ironing table. It is hard to get a good read on the imagery that way - especially for something so large. This measures about 45 x 50. So, I went ahead and fused the pieces I had in place using my iron and then I moved it to the design wall to get a better look at it. There are spaces yet to fill in, but I think I am heading in the right direction. The black is the foundation and it should all disappear.

Adding Sky Fabrics
Now that the "rocks" are all in place, I have moved to the top and am adding sky fabrics in muted blues, grays and purples. Again, I am working with strips and filling in. This is a new twist on some of my previous working styles.

Petroglyph Canyon Inspirations
We made several late spring trips to nearby Petroglyph Canyon with family members. This is located on BLM land in the Pryor Mountain foothills.
I am always inspired by this place, and I return again and again to these colors and textures in my work. I sorted through my hand dyed, hand painted, and hand printed fabrics for these colors and textures. I hope to begin a series of work with these colors and textures and fused collage.
These are some of the fabrics I have pulled so far.

Petroglyph Canyon Hike
We brought our lunch and made a day of it. This is such a lovely place to visit on a mild early spring day!

Petroglyph Canyon
We have never seen any other people down in the canyon before, but this time we bumped into a couple that volunteers to oversee this area of BLM land. They were able to tell us where to find a group of panels that we have not been able to find, previously. I was thrilled!

Petroglyph Canyon Visit
Petroglyph Canyon is just an hour away in the Pryor Mountain foothills on BLM land. The location is not marked in any way and the road is rough and hiking is involved. From where we park, we have to hike about a mile or so to get to the petroglyphs. We LOVE going here in the early spring!
This high desert area is very warm compared to the nearby areas - it is like an entirely different climate compared to our home just an hour away.Saturday, April 5, 2014

More Dinosaur National Monument Petroglyphs
This lizard petroglyph is about 8 feet long. It is high up on this cliff (pictured below).
This is the view of the valley below from up at the petroglyph level on the cliff.
Quite a number of well done petroglyphs are found up on this cliff - which involved a short hike up the hillside.

Petroglyphs at Dinosaur National Monument
While visiting Dinosaur National Monument, we drove to the end of the road, because we wanted to see the terrain, as well as the petroglyphs in the area. This was our first stop - up the trail - in the sheltered alcove - we saw what we call the alien (below)
